The first settlements in the Gaeta area date back to the 9th-10th century BC. Subsequently, the entire coastal area of the gulf was an integral part of the region populated by the ancient Aurunci, settled between the Liri river, the Volturno and the Roccamonfina volcano area. Only in 345 BC did the territory of Gaeta come under the influence of Rome.

Latium according to the Historical Atlas During the Roman period, Gaeta became a very famous holiday resort, frequented by emperors, rich patricians, consuls and famous senators of the time . Their arrival was also facilitated by the construction of a new Roman road, the Via Flacca, which was shorter than the Appian Way.

The territory of Sermoneta was already populated in the archaic period. In its territory, near the current Valvisciolo Abbey, it is thought that the ancient Volscian city Sulmo once stood , mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid.

It was assumed that the expansion of swamps Pontine and the invasions of the Saracens have pushed the inhabitants of ancient Sulmo to move to the current Sermoneta, which is already mentioned with this name in the 11th century.

The Sermineti castrum , which fell under the family's dominion at the beginning of the 13th century Annibaldi, became a possession of the family Caetani: in 1297 Pietro Caetani, count of Caserta, bought it thanks to the good offices of Pope Boniface VIII (Benedetto Caetani). The Caetani made Sermoneta the center of their dominions in southern Lazio.

The town of Ninfa, whose name seems to derive from a classical age temple dedicated to nymphs, present on an islet in the small lake, must have already existed during the Roman era, but it was a small agricultural centre. During the middle of the VIII century Pope Zacharias received a gift from Constantine V Copronymus, as a sign of gratitude for having opposed the advance of the Lombards by interceding with King Liutprand, vast agricultural areas near Norma, where there was a country estate.

The city is located in the Pontine countryside on the southern edge of the plain itself, south of the Circeo promontory, near the mouth of the Amaseno river, on the Tyrrhenian coast (Gulf of Gaeta).

The city develops from an offshoot of Monte Sant'Angelo, where the historic center lies, up to the Circe seafront. The cliff of Pisco Montano clearly marks the southern border of the town; to the south the plain of Fondi opens up , to the north the urbanization progressively slopes down towards the open countryside and rural villages.

Sperlonga stands on a spur of rock, the final part of the Aurunci mountains, which extends into the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Gaeta, flowing into the San Magno mountain.

The surrounding area is mostly flat. The beach of fine, golden white sand alternates with various rock spurs that flow into the sea, forming wonderful coves, often reachable only by boat. These rock formations are present to the south of the town, in the direction of the promontory of Gaeta.
